Explora Journeys has announced that renowned adventurer Mike Horn has joined the operator as its brand ambassador. According to the press release, Horn will be pivotal in helping shape Explora Journeys’ destination programme in remote regions while aiding the company’s broader sustainability mission.

Mike Horn was born in South Africa in 1966 before relocating to Switzerland, where he still lives to this day. In 1997, his passion for adventure saw him complete a solo traverse of South America, following this feat with the first non-motorised circumnavigation of the equator. Horn continued to prominence in 2017 when he completed a traverse of Antarctica via the South Pole in under 57 days, and in 2002-04 when he embarked on a two-year plus circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle.

In recent years, Horn has used his platform for motivational coaching across various industries, including deep-sea drilling, cricket and football. In addition, his concern for ecological issues has also seen him heavily involved in multiple sustainability initiatives, including his Young Explorers Programme. He’s used his recent endeavours, such as his solo swim of the Amazon River and ascents without oxygen to the 8000+ meter peaks of Makalu and Gasherbrum, to bring attention to issues like deforestation and melting ice caps.

Speaking on the appointment, Explora Journey’s Michael Ungerer CEO said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Mike Horn to the Explora Journeys family. Mike’s dedication to adventure and the environment fits perfectly with our brand values, and we’re excited to work with him to create unforgettable and sustainable experiences for our discerning travellers”.

Horn will join guests on selected sailings, including the inaugural “Arctic Geyser, Calving Glaciers & Fiery Lands of Ice” itinerary, which departs from Reykjavik to New York in September later this year. During the voyage aboard Explora I, he’ll lead seminars about his life as an explorer and how he uses these experiences to navigate daily life.

Commenting on his new role for Explora Journeys, Horn said:

“I am impressed by the sustainability initiatives of the cruise division of the MSC Group [who own Explora Journeys]. Their dedication to innovation and technology aligns with my vision of a world in which we all have to adapt to an ever-changing environment. I am delighted to work closely with Explora Journeys to attain significant accompaniments, promote sustainability and create unforgettable experiences that connect us with nature”.

Explora Journey’s flagship vessel Explora I, will debut in July 2023 with a 15-night inaugural voyage from Southampton to Copenhagen. To learn more, please call our Voyage Consultants on 0800 008 6677.
