GPH Enables Shore Power for Cruise Ships in Valletta

Global Ports Holdings (GPH) has marked the successful incorporation of shore power at Valletta Cruise Port, in line with the most recent press release. This milestone constitutes a significant leap towards environmental sustainability and carries substantial weight for Valletta Cruise Port and GPH.

On the 1st of December 2023, the Viking Saturn took the lead as the inaugural cruise vessel to be entirely powered through the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems at Valletta Cruise Port’s facilities.

The day witnessed the Viking Venus mooring at Boiler Wharf, joining the Viking Saturn in the historic port, and simultaneously being furnished with shore power, achieving successful OPS-powered operations for both Viking ships. This also marks the first time ships connected to shore in the GPH port network.

GPH’s Commitment to Sustainable Initiatives

Stephan Zuered, the COO of Global Ports Holding and GM of Valletta Cruise Port, said, “The successful integration of shore power at Valletta Cruise Port stands as a testament to our dedication to eco-friendly initiatives.

“We prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations, and this achievement aligns with our commitment to advancing green energy solutions across all GPH facilities”, he added.

This £49.9 million initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects, Infrastructure Malta, and Transport Media, and supported by Valletta Cruise Port, introduces shore power to the primary cruise ship quays of Valletta’s Grand Harbour.

The effort results in significant improvements in air quality, as Global Ports Holdings notes a noticeable decrease in emissions.

Shore supply provides cruise ships with power, allowing them to turn off onboard generators in accordance with strict environmental regulations.

Prime Minister Abela Backs Environmental Endeavors

While visiting Valletta Cruise Port recently, Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed backing for the initiative, describing it as a crucial undertaking. He also emphasized the government’s dedication to fostering sustainable practices within the maritime industry.

In acknowledging the environmental challenges faced, he underscored the project’s significance, not only in tackling these issues but also in offering a substantial economic opportunity.

“This project, among many others, showcases the Maltese government’s commitment to spearheading changes essential for a resilient and sustainable economy,” Prime Minister Abela stated.

This milestone equally indicates a strategic progression towards the broader integration of sustainable practices across Global Ports Holding’s entire port network, as noted by the company. It reflects their commitment to prioritising ESG initiatives and contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future for the cruise industry and the communities it serves.
